Under the Red Tent delves into the historical isolation and seclusion faced by menstruating individuals in ancient Western civilization, emphasising the creation of sacred spaces for nurturance and creativity. Anita Diamant's 1997 novel, The Red Tent, reimagines the Old Testament story of Dinah, providing a feminine perspective that addresses gaps in religious texts. In the narrative, women seek refuge under a red tent for childbirth, menstruation, and companionship in an uncertain world. This sense of camaraderie is mirrored in Diego Velázquez’s 17th-century painting Las Hilanderas (The Spinners). The large-scale oil painting depicts a group of yarn spinners working in a dark, womb-like foreground, while the background reveals a light-filled opening where a theatrical play appears to be unfolding. Myatt's painting practice incorporates a diverse array of sources, including primary texts, fictional literature, art history, mythology, three-dimensional digital renderings, neoclassical sculpture, and staged photography.
